"We had been stolen inside the private rooms
We have stayed at Hotel Umberto during 9 days and the experience was very bad. Our bathroom in the 3rd floor was dirty when we just arrived. We had noticed that someone (probably form stuff from the hotel?) entered to OUR ROOMS and STEAL about 900 Euros in cash from different rooms and different days. Also some luggage had been completely messy up, from someone looking for something in our pertinencies. What is more surprising...the hotel did COMPLETELY nothing about this problem!!! Is their hotel, and they need to have some standards of security and protect the private rooms!!!
That was one of my worst experiences ever in a hotel. Completely unbelievable."
Lovely little hotel. Staff is so nice and make you feel so welcome. Nothing was a problem for them . I never had so friendly staff any where else. Calabria is so wonderful and worth a visit. Definitely recommend ❤❤❤❤. If you come here stay in Umberto hotel you want regret. "
"A very friendly hotel, superb value for money
We booked this hotel for a really good price and it turns out to be probably the best value hotel we have ever stayed in. The hotel is easy to find, situated a few minutes walk through town (passing restaurants and shops) from Santa Domenica train station. On arrival we were immediately given a room upgrade. The room was nice, with access to a very large balcony with sea views shared with the rooms either side. Breakfasts were included and these were good, and we liked the hotel and the staff so much we ate our evening meals there three nights - delicious food and good value for money.
The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the Riaci beach (part of it down quite a steep hill) and a 30-40 minute walk to nearby Tropea, a lovely old town with its own beach. It is also worth taking the train to Ricadi and walking to Capo Vaticano and the Grotticelle beach, plus take a trip to Pizzo as that is very nice. Note that Santa Domenica station doesn't have a ticket office or machine and they charge 5 Euros extra on board - we were let off that and had to jump off the train at another station to buy tickets. After that I downloaded the Trenitalia app to buy tickets in advance.
In summary, we recommend the Hotel Umberto and would like to thank the staff there for being so welcoming."
"Nice hotel, very friendly and helpful staff
We stayed here for 2 nights and really enjoyed ourselves. All the staff was extremely nice and helpful answering all our questions, made great suggestions, and even called places to help us get more information and make reservations. All arround great experience.
Only things to be aware of is there is no elevator (staff will help cary things up to your room though) and no 24 hour reception"
"New and clean little hotel, friendly staff, great food
A very nice, small, family-run hotel, spotlessly clean. Room have recently been renovated, bathrooms are new, and the whole hotel area is well kept. I also had a big balcony which was a nice extra.
Breakfast is very good for Italian standards and they have great pizza and pasta in the hotel restaurant in the evening. The closest beach is Baia di Riaci which is fantastic, some 15 minutes of walk down the hill, but there is also a free shuttle bus that takes guests to the beach and back a couple of times per day. Staff is very friendly and polite and always ready to solve any issue you might have. The only downside of the hotel is that there are no minibars in the rooms.
The wonderful Tropea is not far, a couple of minutes by excellent and air-conditioned train, but it is also walkable in the evening (not during the day in the heat though).
The value for the price you pay is excellent."
